There have been six
ships in the
US
Navy that have borne the name Preble. Below is a patch
from
the
5th U.S. Navy ship named in honor of Commodore Edward Preble. The
patch
is
closely patterned after the supposed Preble family coat
of arms. Where the
scroll
on the ship's patch has DLG 15, the number of the ship, the coat
of
arms has the date it was granted to
George
Preble--October 20, 1585. Also, the name on the scroll had two
b's,
which was the spelling before the first
Preble moved to
America. The 6th USS Preble (DDG 88) "Intrepid Patriot" was commissioned in 2002. The commissioning poster can be seen below. |
